Mediation is a method you can use in your divorce if you want; however, it is not the best option for every couple who decides to divorce. Through mediation, you can get divorced without the use of separate lawyers. Instead, you hire one person to serve as your mediator, and he or she helps you both work out a divorce agreement. If you can use this option, you will benefit in the following ways.
It will cost less
If you compare the costs of each spouse hiring a lawyer to the costs of hiring just one mediator, you will see a big difference in costs. This is because, with a traditional divorce, each spouse needs a separate attorney and the attorneys battle it out together. With mediation, you have just one person representing both of you and both of your interests. Paying one person for this legal assistance will always be less than paying two attorneys.
You will not have to let a judge make decisions
Secondly, in a regular divorce, there are times when couples cannot decide how to handle certain parts of their agreement. When this occurs, it is up to a judge to make the decision. Do you really want decisions made by someone who does not even know you? If not, mediation is a great alternative. Together, you and your spouse will work with a mediator to make every necessary decision, and the decisions will be based on what is best for both of you and your children, if you have any.
It helps you communicate with each other
Negotiating together with a mediator will actually help you and your spouse with communication skills, and this will come in handy after your divorce too. If you struggle with communicating, this could be a good experience for both of you. The mediator can help you learn how to speak to each other and handle conflicts, and this will be beneficial for years to come as you work together raising your mutual children.
It is more private
Finally, using mediation for your divorce will keep the matter private. When you have a divorce through the court system, everything becomes public knowledge. If you want to keep things private, mediation is a great idea.

When I began the divorce process, I knew that I wanted to change my name back to my maiden name. I no longer wanted to be associated with the family name of the man that I was divorcing. The problem was, I have three kids that all had their father's name. I wanted to know if I would be able to change their last names to my maiden name rather than having them carry that family's name for the rest of their lives. I found out a lot about what it would take and began working to create this blog to help other women wanting to do the same thing.
